A time worth remembering.......

Come what may... 1 out of every 5 in India go through Engineering. So just imagine how many Engineers the country produces every year!

Every graduated "engineer" now needs a job and if he is lucky, then a job in hand is assured in the pre-final year or else its on the road job hunting! Looking deep into how it works (well not real deep) because it is very simple to analyse the status of Engineers graduating today, it can be seen that not even 1% of their total population is fit to take up a job! This is true and has been rightly quoted several times by the top CEO's.

Apart from the point, I would want to include a small deviation from what is mentioned above-- To know the status of an Engineering student during the time of placement in the pre final year.

The mood and the ambience first establishes itself well and spreads on slowly 2 months prior to the first company's visit. We amateurs are so excited that we tend to gather information from every source possible (be it television, word from someones mouth, internet, telephone, etc etc) about every possible requirement during this time. The most hillarious thing that happens is everytime we hear something, it seems new and everyone has his or her own "depth of analysis" in the issue. This is just a foundataion of the actual reality.

Time passes by with these so called "ideologies" of each individual. A month more to go and this is when the fun part starts! "I got all the question papers of Infosys", says one while the other exclaims saying "I heard IBM's written round was really bad!!" Several people with the same kind of plan now start forming "groups" which tend to grow rather gradually than fast as each one has his own idea! The first thing we hear as a first morning prayer in class would be just this! Heads coming together to solve a puzzle involving some train and bus or the hands of a clock or some antediluvian question. Looking at this, another set of people join the discussion (rather confusion) to make the question even sour. Everyone needs a job and it so seems that each individual tends to test the other persons knowledge rather than improvise oneself!! And at the end of an "eventful discussion", one proudly says "The answer is definitely 35 kmph. It cant be proven wrong!! The solution is wrong!" Now people wonder whether the answer given is wrong, simply because the person said so or if there is a printing mistake involved! Therefore the final conclusion is "The answer is wrong" without even trying to analyse the entire problem. Everyone in the group nod their heads when one agin starts off from the beginning saying "Hey but the length of the train....." while another interrupts saying "It crosses this bridge man!" while the "not so intelligent" people in the group just nod along the entire discussion just to get a whole lot of attention! So the 35kmph is proven wrong and now the next namoona says its 45kmph. So the idea was to prove the first person was wrong! Goodness!


Now the most intelligent of the group will be that person who proved maximum of the concluded answers wrong and henceforth will be declared as the first student to be selected! The dumbest being the person who concluded the solution with the first answer!
These discussions take place over and over again and the remaining students start getting tensed wondering why they arn't able to form groups of the same kind!

Few more days pass and the first list of companies is out. Tension begins to grip every student tight. All you can hear is "Hey dude, mail me all the questions man" or "Listen, how many do you think they are likely to recruit?" or " Hey I dont remember a word in 8086 man, what if they screw me up?" and so on. While the some "already felt they are placed people" seem rather cool and say "Chill man, I am sure they will not bother too much." Various training programmes are introduced and now the new set of dialogues are "Man ,what a GD!" or "That was good. I feel so confident now."

And finally the day arrives. With every other dude visting the temple before entering the hall seems nervous. The pre-placement talk is on and everyone is excited. A few more hours and they could have this job!! The few "I have too much attitude" people say " What the hell! This company pays so low man... I will not write!" and go. The talk is now done and pin drop silence surrounds the hall when the first round insructions are given. "Ladies and gentlemen, your first round will be a written round followed by a break. Following this will be a list of all short listed candidates for the Group Discussion which will be followed by another break and then another list of all short listed candidates will be displayed entering the interview round. I would like to wish students all the very best."

Students are placed in rooms for their written round and each one whispers in a short prayer to himself. Each one seems so desperate!

This is one point in time everyone seems to remember. At the end of the day, students are placed and it is a whole different feeling getting placed even before you are done with Engineering and at the end of it you feel " Oh this wasn't hard, Its no big deal!"
